North Dakota Mensa named its 2016 scholarship winners. Alexandra Heisler of Cando, ND, won the $500 North Dakota Mensa Scholarship, and Bo Lauckner of Leeds, ND, won the $600 Karen Cooper Memorial Scholarship.

Alexandra is attending Minnesota State University in Moorhead, MN, majoring in Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences. Her essay emphasized her academic achievements, undergraduate research, and volunteerism. She plans to become a speech-language pathologist.

Bo is attending the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. Already certified as an EMT, paramedic, and in six other Life Support specialties, Bo is majoring in Biology with plans to become an emergency medicine physician. His essay explained how he became interested in helping others.

The Mensa Foundation conducts annual essay contests awarding college scholarships. The Foundation college scholarship program bases its awards entirely on the applicants' essays. No consideration is given for grades, academic program, financial need, or Mensa membership. The Foundation program relies on approximately 400 volunteers around the country to read and judge the essays. Winners may apply the award towards undergraduate, graduate, and non-traditional programs.

Alexandra's $500 scholarship was funded through the Foundation by North Dakota Mensa members. Bo's $600 Karen Cooper Memorial Scholarship is a regional scholarship funded entirely through the Mensa Foundation.

Donations to the North Dakota Mensa Scholarship fund can be made at www.mensafoundation.org/support-my-foundation. Be sure to name "North Dakota Scholarship" in the subject line.
