Plagiarism: What It Is And Why It Is A Problem

Many people wonder if there is anything left that is not written or talked about. Everything is on the search engines. This is the reason as to why people and especially do not believe that there is anything left that they can talk about. Plagiarism is theft and is illegal. Taking other peoples works and gaining credit for it is against the educational standards. This is especially seen during educational projects where students go to the net and get fully done projects and present them for grades. Plagiarism and its effects first came into the picture in the 18th century in Europe. This was in the effort to protect works of other people and promote originality. The idea was brought up by Romantic Movement in the aim of protecting their works. They used to create and write literary and artistic works. It was a wise idea to protect their works from being used by other people as their own original works.

Different Forms of Plagiarism

People express their thoughts, ideas, feelings and emotions in different ways. They have a right to protect their original ideas from being used by other lazy persons. It may not be dictated as a crime by the law but it constitutes to one in the academic world. There are ten common forms of plagiarism that are most known. The most common of all is where students hand in other people’s work as if it were their own work. Some may copy short passages from different sources and present that as their own work. This illustrates very high level of irresponsibility for a student; over relying on works of other people. Other forms of plagiarism involves rewriting works of other people and failing to do citations og the sources. It is not also correct to cite just some parts and leave the rest. Even in cases where you have cited, it is right that you rewrite the work to ensure that the wording. In cases where citations are wrong, that amounts to plagiarism.

Why is Plagiarism wrong?

Plagiarism promotes a culture of being lazy. People do not want to think but want to get credit or pass in assignments whereas they have used shortcuts and copied other peoples’ works. This is stealing as you benefit from other peoples’ ideas and thoughts. It does not promote the culture of reading and coming up with new information, ideas and feelings.
