British Sign Language Level 2

You will expand on the vocabulary and topics you were taught on Level 1 and learn how to construct more complex discussions in BSL.

Course Context

Femaura’s British Sign Language Level 2 course will include essential vocabulary at intermediate level as well as BSL grammar and structure, including sign order and Non Manual Features covering areas such as:

  • Social interaction and activities
  • Educational routes
  • Work environment
  • Deaf culture and history

We will use the same dynamic teaching methods as in Level 1 with additional activities such as discussions, receptive exercises using a range of videos and role play from real life examples. Homework will be given and you will receive feedback on both classwork and homework in BSL by our Deaf tutors.

At the end of the course students ought to be able to use a wide range of vocabulary in BSL with appropriate grammatical content to tell a story and express yourself in a conversation. We will also teach you appropriate behaviour when socialising with Deaf people, such as turn taking and asking for clarification.

This is a certified course and in order to receive the ABC Awards, BSL L2 qualification students must successfully undertake three assessments; one for productive, one for receptive and one dialogue. These can be retaken as needed.

This course is available in 3 formats:

  • Intensive; 10 consecutive full days over 2 weeks
  • Daytime; 10 full days over 10 weeks
  • Evening; 20 weekly sessions

British Sign Language Level 3 Introduction

Level 3 is suitable for those students who already have a BSL Level 2 qualification and wish to progress to the advanced level. Femaura’s British Sign Language Level 3 course candidates will be able to sign at normal speed and fluency and understand a wide range of social and work related vocabulary while having a conversation in both formal and informal settings.

Context

In order to achieve this the course will include essential vocabulary at advanced level as well as BSL grammar and Linguistic features covering:

  • Timeframes- past, present, future
  • Appropriate behaviour when socialising and working with Deaf people
  • Ability to adapt your register with different people and domains
  • Express your opinion and arguments in a debate situat We will use a number of teaching methods such as filmed and assessed tasks, group activities, demonstrations and a variety of receptive exercises. Homework will be given and you will receive feedback on both classwork and homework in BSL.

At the end of the course students will be able to give a professional presentation about Deaf issues, use various BSL grammatical structures with fluency, understand a wide range of vocabulary and answer questions at advanced level.

Certificate?

This is a certified course and in order to receive the ABC Awards, BSL L3 qualification students must successfully undertake six assessments; four receptive, one presentation (which covers productive) and one dialogue. As required, part of the course, you need to attend Deaf Clubs or Sign Clubs regularly to practice with Deaf people to develop more vocabulary and developing at high standard of BSL Level 3 skills.

If needed you can retake them. Femaura’s tutors will offer full pastoral support to ensure candidates complete their coursework portfolio. Please note in our BSL Level 6 course, we accept your ABC Awards Level 3 qualification as long as you have achieved at a high level of BSL Level 3.
